We tested the Donzi 28 ZX Scorpion edition at the Donzi dealer meeting in Sarasota, Florida. Steve Simon, Donzi’s director of high performance, piloted the boat out of the dock and into the azure Atlantic waters. ‘Beyond Performance’ Scorpions sting opponents with a powerful attachment located at the end of their tail. This scorpion is no different. Each of the twin MerCruiser Scorpion stern drives has 377 cubic inches of displacement and produces 377 hp, taking the 28 ZX to a top speed of 81.3 mph (5,200 rpm). Likewise, the 28 ZX also offers a great amount of control. The Z-Tech stepped hull forces air under it, reducing wetted surface and optimizing speed and handling. The vessel handles well at all speeds, but our test boat seemed to have a preference for going fast – which was fine by us. The boat quickly jumped to life, making the 3.8 seconds it took to hit plane seem like a reflex reaction. Cruising across the light chop at 54.2 mph (3,500 rpm), our test boat offered a smooth, stable ride. The Mercury Mirage Plus props deserve their fair share of the credit for the boat’s mercurial ways. They are designed to handle high horsepower applications and have a 25 inch pitch. The Scorpion Package The new engines and props are a great addition, but the special Scorpion package includes more than just a change of power – it’s an entire look. In fact, it’s an entire attitude. Donzi has created sizzling new graphics for the package. The company’s traditional checkered flag flows across the stern, splashing the boat’s white hull with red and black accents. A special scorpion logo adorns the port and starboard sides of the bow. With the Scorpion package, typical options like the hourmeter and the depth finder are standard, as are the trim and the throttle. Mechanical indicators and a hydraulic steering system are also included. Donzi has thrown in a cornucopia of other great features, including K-planes, electric seats, bolstered aft seating, a through-hull exhaust system and a Sony AM/FM stereo system with a 10-disc CD changer and five speakers. The final touch of sophistication, confirming that this is indeed Donzi’s Scorpion edition, is the engine compartment’s color-matched diamond plate. It seems almost a waste to put such a handsome feature out of sight -- but we’re not complaining. Still a 28 ZX The Scorpion package is an excellent choice, but even without it, the Donzi 28 ZX still has plenty of bells and whistles. All of the boat’s hardware is stainless steel, including the five pop-up cleats and the grabrails. The 40 ounce marine grade carpet in the cabin is removable, as is the portable head. The designers also removed the cabin liner and added a stick-built cabin, which is stronger and weighs less. The 28 ZX’s brand-new deck incorporates new port and starboard dash consoles. The starboard dash – which serves as the helm station – has full Gaffrig instrumentation and color-matched bezels. The dash panel itself is broader, allowing for greater versatility when the time comes to customize. The port side has an in-dash cooler that’s great for keeping food and beverages perfectly chilled. The new cooler and the smattering of cup holders will make life a lot easier when you’re playing host to friends and family. Donzi Delivers Donzi uses only top-quality materials -- including 3610 multi-directional knitted fiberglass cloth, 32 ounce UV-protected vinyl and 316-L stainless steel hardware through-bolted with aircraft locking nuts -- but in the case of unforeseen incidents, every Donzi 2000 model is covered by the company’s comprehensive Z-Care five-year limited warranty program. Z-Care is transferable, and it comes with a 24-hour toll-free hotline and free towing and dockside assistance.
